How to Prepare for Your Air Duct Cleaning Appointment

An air duct cleaning doesn't ask much of you — but about 20 minutes of preparation the night before saves real time on the day and helps the crew do a more thorough job. This is the checklist we wish every customer had, straight from our technicians.

The night before: a 20-minute walkthrough

  • Locate every register and return. Walk each room and note vents hiding under rugs, behind curtains, or inside closets. The crew will find them all anyway — but your list speeds the initial walkthrough.
  • Clear vent access. Move furniture, rugs, and décor off supply registers and away from return grilles. A clear two-foot working space around each is plenty.
  • Clear the equipment area. The furnace or air handler is the crew's main workstation — clear storage boxes and laundry a few feet back so panels can come off.
  • Note your problem areas. Musty smell in one bedroom? A vent that barely blows? Write it down — it tells the crew where to look hardest and photograph first.
  • Check the filter size you use. Good time to have a fresh one on hand; a new filter is the right finishing touch after cleaning.

The morning of

  • Parking and access. Leave the driveway spot closest to the door with the shortest hose run to the furnace — usually the garage or front door. In tight city parking (Pittsburgh, we see you), a saved curb spot genuinely helps.
  • Secure pets in a room the crew can do first or last — coordinate at the walkthrough.
  • Plan for noise. The collection unit sounds like a loud shop vacuum for a few hours. Schedule calls and naps accordingly.
  • Have your questions ready. How often for your household, what the photos show, whether the dryer vent is due — ask everything; honest answers are part of the service.

What you do NOT need to do

  • No need to clean or vacuum first — that's literally what we're there for
  • No need to remove registers or open equipment panels — leave hardware to the crew
  • No need to leave the house — stay, watch, and ask questions
  • No need to board pets for the day — a closed room works fine

Booking logistics worth knowing

Appointments run 2–4 hours for a typical single-family home; add time for multiple systems or a bundled dryer vent cleaning (worth doing while the crew's there — one trip charge, both systems handled). We serve the full tri-state area — Greater Pittsburgh, the Youngstown area, and the WV panhandle — and we're happy to confirm your address is in range when you book.

Want the minute-by-minute picture of the appointment itself? That's the next read: what to expect on the day of service, from arrival to after photos. And if the money side is the open question, see quotes, promotions and financing options.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to move furniture before the crew arrives?

Only what's directly blocking registers, return grilles, or the path to the furnace. Slide sofas or beds off floor vents and clear a couple of feet in front of returns. Our technicians handle the rest and use floor protection throughout.

What about my pets during the appointment?

Plan a closed room, a crate, or a visit to a neighbor. The equipment is loud, doors open repeatedly to run hoses, and curious pets and air hoses don't mix. Tell us about pets when booking and the crew will coordinate room-by-room so they're never cornered.

Does someone need to be home the whole time?

An adult needs to let the crew in, walk the system at the start, and review the after photos at the end. In between, you're free to work from home or step out — many customers do.
