How Often Should You Perform Dryer Duct Cleaning?

Dryer ducts are an important part of your home because they shunt the hot air from your dryer away from your dwelling. However, lint can build up inside these ducts, which is why you need to clean your dryer ducts every once in a while. Today’s blog from Superior Air Duct Cleaning answers the question, “How often should you perform dryer duct cleaning?”

Once A Year

You should perform dryer duct cleaning at least once per year as a general rule of thumb. It depends on several factors, such as:

  • Size of the duct, including length of the tube and width of the opening
  • How often do you use your dryer
  • Size of your family
  • Operation of the dryer

But first, an explanation.

What Is A Dryer Duct?

You can find your dryer duct in two ways. First, it’s attached to the dryer vent tubing that comes out of your clothes dryer. The tubing is flexible, and it connects the dryer to the floor or wall. The opening in the floor or wall leads to your dryer duct.

The other way to find your dryer duct is to look at the outside of your home. You’ll see a small opening covered by a screen or small flaps. The flaps open and close based on if warm air is coming from them. When your dryer is operating, you’ll see the flaps move up and down, or you’ll feel air coming from the screen.

Factors For The Frequency Of Dryer Duct Cleaning

  1. How Big Is Your Dryer Duct?: If it’s just 1 or 2 feet long, meaning your dryer is close to the outer wall of your house, you may need dryer duct cleaning every six months. The good news is that shorter ducts are easier to clean than longer ones.
  2. How Wide Is The Opening?: Narrow dryer ducts need to be cleaned more often because there is a greater chance of lint build-up.
  3. How Often Do You Use Your Dryer?: Daily laundering means there is a higher chance that more lint will travel through the dryer duct. Weekly usage decreases the amount of lint build-up. If you use your appliance more than once per week, consider dryer duct cleaning once per quarter.

Cleaning Your Dryer Duct

The most efficient way to clean your dryer duct is with a vacuum hose attachment. Your vacuum sucks up the lint readily. You might not be able to get all the way into the dryer duct if there are twists and turns, so professional dryer duct cleaning comes in handy for the safety of your family and for the efficient operation of your dryer.
